Free Printable Letter H Coloring Page with Cute Hippo for Kids

Download this free printable Letter H coloring page, a fun and engaging educational resource designed to build early literacy and letter recognition for toddlers and preschoolers.

This adorable coloring page features a happy cartoon hippo resting in a peaceful pond right alongside a bold, capital letter H. As children color the friendly hippo and the large letter outline, they naturally combine creative play with essential early learning skills.

The Letter H

The letter H is the eighth letter of the English alphabet. It produces the soft, breathy /h/ sound made by gently pushing air through an open mouth, as heard at the beginning of everyday words like hat, house, and hippo.

Why a Hippo?

A hippo is a fantastic subject for teaching the letter H because the word starts with the distinct /h/ sound and features a memorable, friendly animal shape. Visualizing the smiling hippo next to the letter H helps young learners form a strong mental connection between the letter’s shape and its sound.

Coloring Ideas

• Hippo Palette: Try soft shades of gray, light blue, or lavender for the hippo’s body, leaving the belly slightly lighter and adding a gentle pink tint for the inner ears and cheeks.
• The Bold Letter H: Encourage your child to paint or color the large capital letter H in their favorite vibrant color—like bright yellow, orange, or green—to make it stand out.
• Background Details: Color the calm pond water light blue, shade the cattails in rich browns and greens, and color the floating lily pads bright green.

Simple Letter H Activities

• Finger Tracing: Before reaching for crayons, have your child trace the lines of the capital letter H with their index finger to build muscle memory for letter formation.
• Sound Practice: Practice making the breathy /h/ sound together, asking your child to hold a hand in front of their mouth so they can feel the gentle puff of air.
• Word Hunt: Challenge your child to look around the room or think of other fun words that start with the letter H, such as hug, hop, heart, or hand.

Questions to Ask

• “What sound does the letter H make when you say the word ‘hippo’?”
• “Where does a hippo like to spend most of its day to stay cool?”
• “If you could pick any wild color for this friendly hippo, what color would you choose?”
