The World of Flying Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs and prehistoric reptiles are some of the most exciting creatures to capture a child’s imagination, roaming the skies millions of years ago. Pronounced terr-oh-DAK-til, these magnificent winged animals lived during the age of reptiles alongside land-dwelling dinosaurs. Three fun flying reptile words to practice together include:

• Pterodactyl (the famous flying prehistoric reptile)
• Kite (a lightweight toy flown in the wind on a long string)
• Cloud (a white, fluffy mass floating high in the sky)

Why a Pterodactyl and Kite Scene?

A cheerful Pterodactyl flying with a kite was chosen for this page because the combination of a winged creature and a soaring toy sparks a wonderful sense of freedom and high-flying adventure. Pairing a friendly dino with an uplifting outdoor activity creates a dynamic composition that encourages storytelling about the sky.

Coloring Ideas:

• Use bright shades of mint green, teal, warm yellow, or lavender to give the flying Pterodactyl its own unique look and personality, adding a softer tone for its wings.
• Let the child get creative with the diamond kite and its ribbons by coloring them in vibrant, cheerful shades of red, blue, orange, and gold.
• Fill in the background clouds, distant mountains, and tropical foliage with soft blues, earthy browns, and fresh springtime greens.

Simple Sky Activities:

• Finger Trace: Have your child trace the sharp triangular shape of the kite, the winding string, and the flying dinosaur’s happy smile with their finger before picking up a crayon.
• Wind and Sky Chat: Talk about what it would feel like to fly high up in the sky like a Pterodactyl on a breezy afternoon.
• Word Brainstorm: Brainstorm other things you might see floating high up in the sky, like birds, clouds, or airplanes.

• How high do you think this friendly Pterodactyl is flying with its special kite today?
• If you had wings like a flying dinosaur, where would you want to soar first?
• What colors would you choose to make the brightest, most colorful kite in the sky?
